The windscreen wiper mechanism turned out to be better than I suspected. Although heavily rusted, definitely not beyond repair. After I disassembled the wiper engine, I cleaned and checked the coil, replaced the carbon-brushes, greased all moving parts and reassembled the engine. Note that 99% of the wiper engines are 6 Volt, if you plan to switch to a 12 Volt electrical system; check our 12 Volt conversion topic for more information.
The windscreen wiper frame was sandblasted, primed and painted. Make sure you replaced all the clips and lock washers when putting all the bits and pieces back together. Most of them will be worn with age and should not be used again. Carefully grease all the turning points of the mechanism so you can enjoy squeak free windscreen wiping :-)
